The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT)-Teachers in the Davao Region clarified that the P20 monthly contribution to the union is voluntary. This statement came after a group of teachers requested the removal of the salary deduction.
ACT-Teachers Davao Region President Elenito R. Escalante emphasized in a media interview on November 30, 2024, in Davao City that the fee supports the union’s operations and advocacy for teachers’ welfare. He noted that other labor unions often deduct higher fees, and despite assumptions about the union’s total collections, the amount is insufficient to sustain its activities.
Escalante explained that the P20 fee is used for campaigns and operations, such as advocating for teacher benefits like the clothing allowance. He also highlighted the union’s ongoing push for a P50,000 entry-level salary for teachers, a goal that requires additional resources.
He further clarified that only registered members who complete the necessary forms are charged the P20 fee. The amount is automatically deducted by the Department of Education (DepEd) from members’ salaries and remitted to the union. Escalante encouraged teachers to support the union, describing it as a vital organization fighting for their rights and fair compensation.
