A test of democracy amid fragile peace in BARMM

As the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) prepares for its upcoming parliamentary elections, the region stands at a crossroads, where the exercise of democracy intertwines with the delicate balance of peace established by years of negotiations. This election is a milestone, as it marks the first parliamentary vote since the BARMM was officially created in 2019, a result of the peace agreements between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). It presents a historic opportunity for the people of BARMM to elect representatives who will have the power to shape policies, economic programs, and development initiatives specific to the region’s unique needs and aspirations. Yet, as the region gears up for this democratic exercise, the lingering challenges of political stability and social cohesion loom large, requiring a careful approach to safeguard the peace that has been hard-won.

This election will test the resilience of the peace pact, as rivalries between local political groups, economic disparities, and unresolved clan conflicts continue to pose potential flashpoints. The BARMM’s new government must ensure that the electoral process is free, fair, and inclusive, while maintaining the neutrality and transparency that will foster public trust in this emerging democratic institution. National authorities and the Commission on Elections must support BARMM in setting a solid precedent for future elections in the region, reinforcing peace through governance. A peaceful and credible election will not only affirm the region’s autonomy but also send a powerful message about the transformative potential of self-governance. The journey toward lasting peace in Mindanao remains complex, but through this democratic process, BARMM can take a significant step toward stability, progress, and self-determination.
