A paw-sitive prayer of a community in honor of St. Francis of Assisi

By Simon Pedro

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in our community’s ‘Dalaw Patron,’ a cherished tradition where we visit homes to pray, sing, and share stories in anticipation of our village fiesta. This ritual not only enriches our spirits but also serves as a bridge to connect with our neighbors—people we may see daily yet seldom know on a personal level.

One such neighbor was ‘Ate Babes,’ someone I had never gotten to know well despite living in the same village for years. It was her turn to host the visit of our patron saint.

As we gathered in her home, I sensed a wave of emotion sweeping over her. During our prayers, she wiped away tears, her emotions visibly burdened. Yet, beneath her raw emotions lay a profound faith that spoke volumes about her character.

After our prayers, we shared a candid conversation that revealed her deepest worry, her dog, “Volvo.” Her beloved companion had been struggling to eat for days and was losing weight. The visible concern on her demeanor was unmistakable. For ‘Ate Babes,’ ‘Volvo’ was not merely a pet; he was her faithful companion, a member of her family whose well-being weighed heavily on her heart.

Reflecting on my own experience, I recalled the time my two beagles had fallen ill. A friend had recommended a liquid remedy, which I initially doubted. But to my surprise, it worked wonders. Both dogs bounced back to health, revitalizing my faith in the power of community support and shared knowledge. So, I offered ‘Ate Babes’ that same solution, hoping it would bring the similar relief to ‘Volvo.’

She was very thankful, and as I reminded her of St. Francis of Assisi—our patron saint and the protector of animals—we took a moment to pray for his intercession in ‘Volvo’s’ recovery. This act, simple yet profound, encapsulated the spirit of our community.

In that moment, I realized the significance of our shared experience transcended beyond a dog’s recovery. It illuminated how faith can unite individuals, often through the smallest acts of kindness. ‘Ate Babes’ love for her pet and her unwavering belief in a higher power forged a connection between us, showcasing that the essence of community lies in our ability to support and uplift one another during challenging times.

Historically, the relationship between Filipinos and their pets has evolved significantly. In traditional Filipino culture, animals were often viewed primarily as working companions or guardians. However, with the rise of urbanization and changing societal values, pets have increasingly come to be seen as cherished family members.

Recent studies indicate that around 67% of Filipinos own pets, particularly dogs, reflecting a cultural shift toward viewing animals as integral to family life. This transformation mirrors a broader global trend where companionship and emotional support provided by pets are increasingly recognized. Many Filipinos now consider their pets as children or siblings, investing in their health and well-being, which further emphasizes the depth of this relationship

Just like most Filipino pet owners, ‘Ate Babes’ treats ‘Volvo’ as part of her family, deserving of love, care, and compassion. Through our prayers and mutual concern, we witnessed something beautifully transformative—faith in action. It’s a reminder that in our often chaotic lives, it’s these simple encounters that reinforce our collective humanity, demonstrating that when we come together in support of one another, we can weather any storm, celebrate every joy, and find solace in the bonds we forge.

As we prepare for our village fiesta, we are reminded of the power of community. In every prayer shared, every story told, and every small act of kindness, we create a tapestry of connection that strengthens us all. Just like ‘Ate Babes’ and ‘Volvo,’ we are all part of a larger family, and together, we can overcome life’s hurdles with grace and gratitude. In a world that often feels divided, let us strive to remember that the simplest acts of compassion can have a lasting impact, binding us together in a shared journey of love and hope.
