A cherished national symbol… Up close

Last June 12, 2024, we celebrated the 126th anniversary of Philippine Independence. Filipinos then engaged in conversations about the historical landmarks associated with that specific day, such as the iconic Rizal Park Luneta in Manila, home to the Independence Flagpole, and the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, where the Philippine flag was first hoisted on June 12, 1898—or so many believe.

But “first hoisted”? Not exactly.

While many Filipinos assume the original flag was unfurled in Kawit, the truth is it made its debut on May 28, 1898, at the Teatro Caviteño in Cavite Nuevo (now Cavite City), following the Battle of Alapan in Imus, Cavite.

Since 1994, in accordance with Executive Order No. 179, Filipinos have observed National Flag Days from May 28 to June 12, during which everyone is encouraged to proudly display the Philippine flag.

A national flag is perhaps the most important symbol of any country, representing its identity and values while fostering unity among its people, regardless of race or religion.

With this in mind, what could be more fulfilling than seeing the original flag up close?

The original Philippine flag

Nestled more than 250 kilometers from Manila, along Happy Glen Loop Road in Baguio City, is the Emilio F. Aguinaldo Museum — the country’s first immersive historical museum dedicated to the road to Philippine independence. Despite its significance, this gem has yet to become a top tourist destination in the Summer Capital.

Owned and managed by Aguinaldo’s descendants, the museum offers visitors the chance to explore various memorabilia from Aguinaldo’s life. But perhaps the most remarkable experience is the opportunity to behold the first Philippine flag, displayed in a dimly-lit, temperature-controlled room — a golden opportunity not to be missed.
