The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced on Tuesday that 567 sites across Western Visayas now have access to free public Wi-Fi under the Free Wi-Fi for All – Free Public Internet Access Program.

DICT Regional Director Ralph Joseph Moncatar emphasized the program’s aim to provide secure and reliable internet access in public spaces, such as hospitals, schools, state universities, transportation hubs, and other key locations across the Philippines.

In Western Visayas, the active access points include 125 in Aklan, 13 in Antique, 157 in Capiz, 24 in Guimaras, 210 in Iloilo, and 38 in Negros Occidental. Moncatar noted that geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas are prioritized for the installation of these facilities.

To further expand connectivity, DICT aims to install the Broadband ng Masa program in 450 sites in Antique.

In addition to these efforts, the DICT is prepared to ensure uninterrupted communication during disasters through its Mobile Operations Vehicle for Emergency (MOVE). Part of the Government Emergency Communications System (GECS), MOVE is equipped with essential tools such as a truck hub, mobile dispatch, drones, VHF and HF radios, and Starlink satellite internet.

“In areas where there are no signals, MOVE is deployed to provide connectivity. Everyone, including responders and the public, can benefit from free Wi-Fi,” Moncatar said during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum.

Western Visayas is one of the two regions in the Visayas to benefit from MOVE, with the other set stationed in Tacloban, Eastern Visayas. DICT also assured readiness to mobilize MOVE units from other regions for additional support during emergencies.

This initiative highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to bridging the digital divide and enhancing disaster response capabilities, ensuring that even the most remote areas remain connected and resilient in times of need.
