A total of 268 tourism establishments in Ilocos Norte received PHP1.3 million in cash aid from the provincial government this week to assist in recovery from the recent devastation caused by Typhoon Marce (international name: Yinxing).
Xavier Ruiz, officer-in-charge of the Ilocos Norte Tourism Office, confirmed on Tuesday that the beneficiaries come from the towns of Bangui, Pasuquin, Burgos, and Pagudpud, with an additional 43 establishments awaiting validation for further assistance.
The aid, aimed at supporting the recovery of businesses vital to the tourism sector, includes accommodation establishments, restaurants, souvenir shops, and other micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Some beneficiaries will also receive construction materials to help repair typhoon-damaged properties.
Tourism-focused businesses in Pagudpud, known for its white sand beaches and scenic landscapes, were among the hardest hit. Resort and restaurant owners in the area received PHP5,000 each to help them rebuild.
Frila Fae Viloria, village chief of Saud, reported significant damage to local infrastructure, with 103 houses, including 20 resorts, homestays, and stores, affected by the typhoon that struck Northern Luzon from November 4 to 8, 2024.
The provincial government’s assistance underscores its commitment to restoring tourism operations, which are a key driver of Ilocos Norte’s economy. The support is expected to help businesses recover and sustain the province’s reputation as a top tourist destination in Northern Luzon.
