A Filipina domestic worker is fighting her way back to recovery after risking her life to save a three-month-old baby from a raging high-rise fire in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district. The blaze — classified as a level 5 fire, one of the city’s most dangerous — left dozens injured and claimed multiple lives, but one act of courage stood out: Rhoda Alcaraz shielding an infant as thick smoke and flames engulfed their building.

Philippine Consul General Romulo Victor Israel Jr. confirmed that Alcaraz, who was rushed to the ICU due to smoke inhalation, is now stable and improving. “Her prognosis is good,” he shared, adding that her vital signs have normalized and she’s expected to continue recovering over the next few days. Israel said he visited her twice over the weekend — first while she was intubated, and again once she could speak and recall the terrifying moments of the rescue.

According to Israel, Alcaraz was the Filipina caught on video cradling her employer’s infant as they made their escape. Even while sedated, she reportedly signaled awareness with a thumbs-up — a moment that resonated with many overseas Filipinos following the story online. The Philippine Consulate continues to monitor her condition and remains in contact with Hong Kong authorities.

Alcaraz’s bravery has sparked an outpouring of support from OFWs worldwide, many calling her a symbol of the everyday sacrifices Filipino domestic workers face abroad. As investigations into the Tai Po tragedy continue, the consulate is also coordinating assistance for other affected Filipinos.
