₱8M smuggled cigarettes seized, two foreigners arrested

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) stopped an alleged cigarette smuggling operation worth more than ₱8 million after arresting two Chinese nationals during a routine checkpoint in Labrador on January 21, 2026.

Police officers manning a checkpoint in Barangay Poblacion flagged down a closed van for inspection. Authorities found 101 boxes of assorted cigarettes inside the vehicle. The items were later confirmed to be allegedly smuggled and had no proper documents.

The seized cigarettes totaled 5,050 reams with an estimated value of ₱8.05 million. The two Chinese nationals riding the van were immediately arrested and are now facing appropriate charges.

The confiscated items have been secured and will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for further investigation and proper disposition.

In a statement, acting PNP Chief PLt Gen Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the arrest shows the importance of police visibility and properly conducted checkpoints. He added that smuggling harms legitimate businesses and deprives the government of much-needed revenue.
